Why you should start a blog

Think about this: some experts estimate that a blogger can make $4000 per month with just 75,000 visitors. Some of the most popular blogs are making tens of thousands of dollars a month or more. That money typically comes from directing readers to products on affiliated sites, from advertising on the blog, and from selling the blogger’s own products.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a small business owner, a manager in an extensive business enterprise, or just someone with special thoughts to share, you need to start a blog. Everyone can benefit from a well-written and informative blog, whether the benefits come in the form of improved marketing or simple community building.

A blog gives you a unique place on the web where you can share valuable thoughts and build an audience of interested followers. A dedicated audience leads, in turn, to successful monetization of your blog. Blogs are an incredibly powerful communication tool, and you can start a blog today, in just a few minutes.

  • How about the fact that 77% of internet users read blog articles?

Why do you need a blog?

Blogs aren’t just for experts and marketing departments. Anyone can reap the rewards that a blog delivers, and when you start a blog, you’re starting on a path to a better life in a myriad way.

Consider these benefits of blogging:

  • Community Building. You have thoughts to share, and there are people out there who will appreciate reading about them. Blogging is a fantastic way to build a community of readers interested in the things that are most important to you. Some of the most successful bloggers have used their blogs as a gathering place for like-minded readers.
  • Fostering Education. Those thoughts of yours are of value to your audience, and when you share them, you help your readers to understand the topics you hold dear. Readers return to blogs again and again when they think of the blogger as an authority on the blog’s topic, and that, too, helps to create an active and loyal readership.
  • Clarifying Your Thoughts. Nothing helps you to get your thoughts in order more than writing them down. You’ve no doubt had thoughts rattling around in your head, during your commute to work, as you’re going to sleep at night, when you’re talking with friends. You’re sure that you have something important to say, but you’re not sure how to say it. Organizing your thoughts in a blog post is a reliable way to get your ideas ready to meet the world.
  • Improving Your Writing. Along with clarity of thought comes clarity of expression. When you start a blog, you’re committing to practicing writing, and as you write more, you’ll become a better writer. It’s as simple as that.

Why does a business need a blog?

Of course, blogs are indispensable tools for business, too. A well-constructed blog is one of the best marketing investments that you can make.

Here are just a few of the benefits of business blogging:

  • Increasing Web Traffic. A blog provides an easy entry for your potential customers to the rest of your web presence. They’ll come to read the articles, and then you’ll deftly direct them to your site. There you’ll convert potential customers to actual customers. Consider, for example, that inbound leads from places like blogs have a close rate more than 10 times higher than outbound marketing leads. Businesses that correctly use content marketing–that is, creating blog or web content of value to potential customers–also have sales conversion rates six times higher than businesses that don’t use content marketing.
  • Establishing Authority. One of the most effective marketing strategies you can have is establishing your business as an authority in your field. An informative, educational blog is the surest way to do just that. More than 80% of shoppers conduct online research before they buy, and more than 80% of those researchers see blog as trusted sources of information about products.
  • Doing Market Research. You’ll be able to see who reads your blog and what articles are the most popular. That’s an invaluable window into the thoughts and habits of your target market.

Creating Your Domain

Think of your domain as your home address on the web. Just as your street address tells people where to find you on the physical planet, a memorable domain allows readers to find your blog easily on the web.

Think about these tips as you choose a domain name for your blog:

  • Make it memorable. Keep your domain name short, and keep it as relevant to you and your subject matter as possible. Using your own name or your business name is a great idea, if those domain names are available.
  • Make it easy to type. Stay away from odd combinations of characters and difficult-to-spell words. You don’t want readers to make mistakes while they’re trying to type your domain name.
  • Add local flavour. If you’re trying to find an audience near you geographically, put clues to your location in your domain name. It will help nearby readers find you, and it will help you in local search engine results.
  • Use keywords. If you’re targeting a particular market or subject matter, use words in your domain name that people who are interested in the subject are likely to search for.

Finding a Web Host

If your domain name is the home address of your blog, your web host is your actual house. A web hosting provider gives you server space where your blog will reside. Some web hosts, such as Bluehost, deliver extensive support and services for your blog for a small monthly or annual fee. Some blogs, such as basic WordPress blogs, can be hosted for free.

Keep these tips in mind as you look for a web host:

  • Look for ease of use. Especially when you’re just starting your blog, you want a web host that allows you to manage your files easily and reliably. Check out the control panel a host uses to get an idea of how easy it will be to use the host.
  • Get the features you need. If you’re only planning to start a simple blog, you probably don’t need lots of features like database management and scripting support. But make sure that the host will allow you to do what you need to do.
  • Leave room to grow. Sticking with the basics is fine, but if you expect your web presence to grow, look for a host that will grow with you. You don’t want to have to change hosts later when your blogging demands grow.
  • Insist on reliability. Look at a host’s uptime statistics to find out how reliable its service is. Your readers won’t be able to find you if your server is down all the time.

Choosing a Blogging Platform

A blogging platform is the set of software tools you’ll use to setup your blog. Think of it as the way you’ll decorate the house you’ve built on your web host’s server. The best blogging platforms are easy to use, give you plenty of options for creating eye-catching designs, and let you create your blog without having to worry about technical details.

The web is full of blogging platforms, but in our opinion, the clear winner among all blogging platforms is WordPress (or WP for short). Here’s why we think so:

  • It’s free. You can start a setup a basic WP blog without spending any money.
  • It’s everywhere. Nine out of 10 blogs on the internet are built using WordPress.
  • It’s not just for blogs. Thirty percent of the web’s 1.8 billion websites are based on WordPress.
  • It’s loaded with design options. More than 5000 pre-designed themes help your blog stand out.
  • It’s powerful. WP offers 45000+ free tools to help your blog to run smoothly, along with widgets that add functionality and features to your blog.

WordPress bloggers publish nearly 100 million posts per month, and their readers post nearly 50 million comments a month. The statistics make it clear that WP is not just one of the most popular blogging platforms on the web, it’s also extremely effective at driving user engagement.
